Concepts Regarding Loose Slug Control

By Helen Nelson

Slugs are meticulously correlated to snails however they differ from them as they do not have an external shell. They basically are known to feed mostly on seedlings as well as vegetables, flowers and ornamentals however, they are considered injurious to sprouts. Just as the snails are known to leave a trail of slime the slugs are also identified by the slime they leave behind on walks or around the house. They can as well feed on vegetables kept in the house and other foodstuffs. This editorial gives in depth information on loose slug control.

Many gardeners have been advised to have ponds near their gardens especially in areas where the pests are dense. The ponds attract frogs and other animals. The ponds will eliminate the pests as most of these animals are known to feed on the slugs and snails. The presence of the frogs in the gardens will eradicate the manifestation of this pests.

Another major way of culturally controlling these annoying pests is shifting from sprinkler irrigation to drip irrigation. Many may wonder how this works but it is mainly done to reduce humidity. When using the sprinkler the water sprinkles into unnecessary places such as the branches thus becoming humid and susceptible to attract these animals.

The time of irrigation is also very important, most gardeners or homeowners irrigate during the night. This is however not recommended as it attracts these pests. Experts recommend irrigation to be done in the early morning as these pests are nocturnal and thus hibernate during the day. Watering during the night will give the pest a comfortable living place and feed on the plants.

There is also another method of control that is recommended by experts and it involves putting up a strip of metal around the garden. These pests do not like to crawl over metal as it damages their bodies. A strip of electrical cable can also work well in ensuring that the pests do not invade your garden. Egg shells have also worked for some homeowners and because this is a natural method most gardeners prefer it.

These pests are nomads and can thus easily move from one place to another compared to the snails the slugs can live anywhere. The snails carry their shells and will go back to where they hibernated. They are night-time animals and will therefore hide during the day under leaves or flowers thus it is very hard to find them.

Trapping is another major method that is recommended by pest control experts. Trapping is very effective if done accordingly. The pests are trapped beneath the flower pots and leaves surface. One can make a small wooden trap that will effectively trap these pests and they can reduce in number.

Conclusively, most people argue that both the immature and adults feed on the green vegetation. The black slug is known to not do much harm as it feeds on dung, rotting material and even meat above living plants.
