Information About The Importance Of Pilot Plants

By Elizabeth Cox

A pre-commercial production system that plays a major role in the production industry is known as a pilot plant. It is used to meet variety of purposes. Before a full-scale production of a product is done or decided, a pilot plant can help in production of a product in small amounts or small scale. Normally, this is essential when an industry wants to apply new technology in production. Before producing on large scale in the market, such plant helps individuals to learn or have more knowledge regarding the new production system. Therefore, pilot plants serve an important role in production.

This period allows the industry to collect important data which assists in designing a full scale production system and products on a commercial level. The plants not only assist in discovering additional research objectives but also assist in offering support to investors when making decisions in investment. An investor in most cases needs to be sure that investment decisions they are making is the right one and with the help of these systems it is easy for them to make such a decision.

Another important purpose that these plants serve is to help in gaining the support of the public. By producing a product on a small scale and presenting it to members of the public, it is possible to study the reaction of the people. Based on the feedback gained from the public, it is possible to determine if the new technology or product is favored by the people. Thus, the decision to produce on large scale can be made.

Typically, a pilot plant will be smaller in size as compared to a full-scale production plant. However, the size also ranges depending on the kind of production under consideration. Besides being small in size, these facilities also present a high level of flexibility. That means that they can be changed more easily to suit different situations.

Stock lab equipment, as an example of modest building provisions can be used to construct such plants in the workroom in their meekest form. The construction involves low cost and do not need extensive engineering work. However, such facilities come with sophistication and huge. One can spent dollars in terms of millions. Besides, extensive engineering effort is applied in designing and implementation. Special materials which are hard to produce could be needed for construction.

These facilities act as a good risk management. They help a company to reduce the risks that come with the construction of a big production plant. Most companies do not utilize these plants despite this process being a good risk manager. A good case is a company intending to improve their capacity of production, such a company may decide to either build a process plant directly or use a pilot plant.

Use of computer systems for process simulation has resulted to the need for these plants to reduce gradually. Process designers feel more confidence with more advanced process simulation, this makes the need for these establishments to reduce. It is however possible for a production unit to implement both pilot systems and use of process simulation.

Designing these systems can be a very complex process. It takes a lot of engineering and knowledge to produce a plant that achieves optimal results. Companies invest huge amounts of money to achieve success with these facilities.
