Different Kinds Of Excavator Attachments

By Linda White

Tools can make or break a job. Smaller jobs obviously use smaller types of tools. These same tools, such as jackhammers, also come as excavator attachments and can make bigger jobs a cinch. The machines typically require special training and licensing to operate. Having just one type of attachment doesn't do the justice needed to maximize the operator's skills. With other types available, you can choose the right tool for the job and eliminate a large number of hours and overtime pay by getting done on time.

Augers are used for specific purposes. They can be found most often with utility and landscaping companies. These are best used with digging post holes for the larger electric poles that provide power to neighborhoods. They're very efficient when it comes to planting trees and shrubs because they save hours of digging for the planting process.

Thumbs on buckets are great for picking up boulders. A bucket by itself works well for digging and excavating large holes. But when you come across an area that has large rocks, using the thumb attachment makes it easy to dispose of them and keep digging. Otherwise, you would have to hire a blasting company to come in an reduce the rocks to rubble before continuing.

Compactors get things ready for a foundation. If the soil needs to be compacted and you are unable to get a road roller in position, you can add the attachment to the excavator and get it in position. They can also be used when a roller isn't available and you're in the process of building a road.

Moving material is made easier by using grapples. There are many different designs for these tools. The square grappler is used to pick up crates and other square or boxed materials. Those with teeth are used in metal scrap yards to grab hundreds of pounds of material at once. This makes the job go faster without having to use forklifts all the time.

Using a jackhammer works well with concrete. But, in situations where it is a wall and not a sidewalk that needs to be broken up, having the person physically there may end up in injury or death. With this attached to a big machine, the angle can be set to bring down the wall without worrying about a person being too close to get injured.

Rippers get through tough ground quickly and easily. These are great in areas that the ground is compacted or frozen but needs to be torn up at the beginning of the process. They are great at breaking up clay as well. They can be attached at the back or front and lowered into the soil and with the forward motion of the machine, they will tear the ground into manageable chunks that can be discarded, scooped, or otherwise reduced. For a new farming area, these will be the first step in the process of preparing the soil for planting season.

With the right tools, any job can be accomplished. If the job is big and needs to be done quickly, it is important to utilize the skills of the larger machine operators by supplying them with the right attachments to get the job done.
