Since the industry is growing and competition is also setting in strongly, it is important to acquire addition qualifications. Employers are currently asking for ACT scores, with a particular interest in math. One can also take vocational plumbing courses to gain more advantage against competition before getting into an apprenticeship program. Whereas this is not mandatory, it is important because it equips one with more knowledge and skills in the field.

Joining an apprenticeship program requires one to be a holder of a high school diploma. Most programs are offered by plumber unions in the region. As such, one can hope to receive the best training in the industry. Learners receive classroom training and practical work. Practical work is meant to help learners to put their skills to work and to master them better.

It is mandatory for all apprentices to be 18 or older. Those who completed high school at the age of 17 may however be allowed. Those who are younger may only join with the consent of their parents. Apprenticeship programs take between 4 to 5 years, but this period may vary a lot.
