Important Facts About Geese Removal

By Sharon Sanders

Geese are large and beautiful birds that exist in large number in North America. Even though they are beautiful, they present several problems to people and property. In places where they exist, people usually complain of being harassed by these birds. When they exist in large numbers, they follow people and try to peck at them. They can also be a threat to small children and pets.

These birds heavily depend on grass for food, meaning that they eat as much grass as possible in their habitat. This results in the destruction of grasses together with the landscape. Grass blades are fed on by the birds and after they are exhausted they go ahead and start digging the soil to reach the roots and tubers. When the birds are too many in a habitat, the destruction can be enormous. This makes geese removal an emergency.

In the location they are found, geese droppings litter the place. They excrete throughout because they also consume continuously during daytime. Filthy smell from the droppings can make it hard for people to live in that place. On the bright side, their wastes are good manure for landscape and lawns.

For many years, geese have been a problem and they persist to be. This has led people to develop ways of regulating their movement and presence in human neighborhoods. Making a place very inhospitable to the geese is among the best tactics to drive them away. One of the ways of doing this is by not giving them food so that they have to move to other places where they can find something to eat.

In the US and Canada, people practice a culture of feeding wild birds and animals that come to their properties. This often attracts more birds to come to the area for free food. If one stops feeding the birds, they may be forced to look for food from other places. This will drive them away over time. However, this may take some time to happen.

Setting up decoys in a place is one way of controlling the presence and movement of Canadian geese. The preferred decoys are those of swans. It is impossible for both swans and geese to inhabit a common place since they are both very aggressive birds when it comes to caring for their chicks. It is not essential to install decoys all year long.

Removal of decoys should be done when the birds relocate to other places. The use of decoys should be mixed with other strategies too. Nets for capturing the birds can be set up together with decoys. Captured birds are them transferred to other areas or they can be euthanized. Euthanizing the birds is prohibited in other areas.

A person can employ other techniques like moving the birds to parks if the law is against killing them. Before participating in geese control, it is very vital to be aware of the laws enforced by the government. This saves one from being on the wrong side with the law.
